What have you learned during the Fixing Broken Computers project?

What is the most important thing you have learned?

What is the most interesting thing you've learned?

Get the small stuff done!

Discussion on the importance of solving the small, easy problems.

if your computer has a number of problems wrong with it, you can pick out some of the easy ones and get those fixed first. A number of people in class are getting stalled by large, impossible problems, and letting that stop them from doing a lot of the small, easy problems.

End of term

Your computer should be mostly complete at this point.

Next week, we will have the paper portfolio due.

The last class of the week will be for presentations where each group explains what they did to their computer and how they improved it.

It is very important that your group are the only people who touch your computer.

with this in mind, you should also not be any place other than at your computer, unless you are getting something for your project or making something for your computer. Do not touch any computer other than your own.

3-4-10

FixingBrokenComputerSpring2010

Problem Solving Process

While you are working on this computer, it is extremely important that you follow a process of problem solving.

  1. Identify the problem - Write a sentence about the problem you are looking to solve with your computer.
  2. Gather information - Tell where you are looking for information. Who are you asking? what web pages are you looking at? What information are you looking up? Include printouts of the pages you find online. Put these in your folder.

  3. Choose a possible solution - Write out what you think the possible solutions are. Find at least two or three possible ones and choose the one that is most likely to succeed. Put this in sentences and lists.

  4. Try out your solution - Do it. Test the ideas. Make the changes. Write some notes as you go about what you find and try.
  5. Assess how well your solution worked - OK, so did it work? Did your possible solution cause a new problem?
  6. Determine if your problem is solved or if you need to refine the problem description - Is there more to be done on the problem? If it did or didn't work, what have you learned?

This project is not about speed, it is more important that you follow the process so that you can have a successful time working on repairing the computer.

At the end of the period, make sure all of your written and printed work from the day is stored in your folder.

Homework:

EACH person will do a Weekly Update

Write this on your blog.

Write at least three paragraphs to explain

  1. What you did in class this week.
  2. What you learned about Building and Repairing Computers this week.
  3. What you would like to know more about.

Hand this in at the start of the first class of next week. Do not expect to print it in class.

3-2-10

FixingBrokenComputerSpring2010

Process

While you are working on this computer, it is extremely important that you follow a process of problem solving.

  • Identify the problem
  • Gather information
  • Choose a possible solution
  • Try out your solution
  • Assess how well your solution worked
  • Determine if your problem is solved or if you need to refine the problem description

This project is not about speed, it is more important that you follow the process so that you can have a successful time working on repairing the computer.

Working information folders

The paper folders you handed in last period are graded and ready for you to have back.

Some notes of things to work on:

     Keep handwritten notes

Print the pages with information about what you believe the problem is.

Keep complete notes about the project.

This process should help you to work on one thing at a time, do it well and have success with your computer.

3-1-10

FixingBrokenComputerSpring2010

Paper documentation

At this point, your group should be gathering information that will be used to diagnose and repair your computer.

This information will also be in your paper portfolio.

Starting this period, and continuing through the project, you will keep a manila folder for the project.

Inside your folder, you should keep:

  • The pages you wrote down all the information on the outside of the computer
  • Pages that show what you looked up to find solutions to problems.
  • Handwritten notes about the things you try.

Hand this in at the end of this period. After this period, you will keep this in your group's locker.

Bring in a padlock by next period (homework grade)

What can your computer be?

Locate the motherboard manufacturer and model number.

Find the specification sheet on the Motherboard

Identify the limitations and possibilities for your Motherboard.

What CPU chips can it take?

How much RAM can it take?

What kind of RAM can it take.

How many IDE/USB/SATA devices can it take?

What are the power requirements for this motherboard?

What other interesting information do you find about the motherboard?

Write this as a Ning blog post.

Hand it in by the end of the period.

2-24, 2-25-10

FixingBrokenComputerSpring2010

This period, we will start in on the Fixing Broken Computers project.

This project is mostly about Problem Solving, a process in which you Identify a problem, Gather Information, Identify a posible solution, implement the solution, test the solution and then assess the effectiveness of your solution.

You will cycle through the Problem Solving and Design Process many times in this project.

In this project, you will choose a partner to work with.

You and your partner will choose a computer from those available in the room.

You will work with this computer for the rest of the project and will not be able to return it for another.

Each one of these computers has been discarded for some reason.

You will need to identify the reason and take measures to fix it.

The hard drive on the computer will need to be backed up for future reference/use.

Each day, you will have an assignment. There will be a written component to the assignment, and something to hand in.

At various points in the project, you will have to hand in documentation to move to the next step.

When you are working on a complex system such as a computer, you will need to keep in the habit of looking for information and trying out possible solutions.

Persistence, staying with the challenge and not giving up is important.

Communicating with you classmates about the challenges you are having with the project will often lead to great solutions.

Documentation of the project is of great importance.

In your documentation, you are looking to do several things:

Demonstrate that you are following a process to improve and not damage the computer.

Create a record of the settings and conditions of the computer.

Show what you have done to improve the computer.

Show how your improvements have made the computer better.
