Each person has been working on an individual project.
At this time, you should take some time to document what you have been doing on the project.
In as much detail as possible, answer the following questions:
What is the project you are working on?
What have you done? (be as specific as possible)
What have you learned about computers and their build or repair from this project?
What are some of the problems you anticipate having in the near future on this project, and what will you do to meet those problems?
Save the documentation in your Google Docs account.
Print a copy and hand it in.
Publish the Google doc and email a link to duxtech.
4-28-09
Identify a project that you would be interested in doing.
Write a proposal of how you would do the project during class and at home.
Some points to include:
What will the overall theme of the project be?
What will you build?
What will you do on the project during class?
What will you do on the project outside of class?
How will you and other people know if you are working on the project?
What will you do to document the project?
How will you show the project to the school community and beyond when it is complete?
Give a timeline of the project.
Include in your timeline: daily goals, what should be done by progress report time, what should be done by the end of the term

What can the computer tell you?
Inside the case
Look at all the components inside the case.
Identify what they are by looking, reading and observing the type, location and size value of the hard drive, motherboard, RAM, cooling system and more.
Make notes on what you see and put the information in your google doc.
Use compressed air to blow out the dust in the case.

Fixing Broken Computers
What can the computer tell you?
Outside the case
Find everymarking on the exterior of the case of the computer.
Write down all the numbers, notes, and other information on the case.
Have the computer tell you as much as possible about itself without turning it on or opening it.
Put all the information into a google doc shared between the partners on the project.

Parts of a Computer
Discussion about your parts of the computer. Printed version due on today.
We will post the google docs and link to them for public access.
Use google documents on your account and explain what your part of a computer is. Put your course email address at the top as your name. Print the document and bring it to class on Friday.
- What is the part of the computer
- What are the components of that system?
- What is the history of that system?
- What is some of the future of the system?
In class Computer Repair:
- Use our google documents accounts to keep track of this information
- Identify problems we could solve in the computer lab this semester.
- Make a list of the problems, and set it up so we can tackle them in a systematic way.
- Naming of the computers
- Setting up a system for keeping track of the information about the computers and their problems.
- Identifying the needs of the computers
- Setting priorities on how to approach the problems
Possible purchase of computers to replace worst of the machines.
What level of hardware?
What vendor?
What costs?

Project for term 3
We will examine and begin planning for our Term 3 project.
In the Term 3 project, we will be updating a portion of the Duxtech computer lab.
This portion of the lab needs to have the computers working consistently, properly functioning, dual operating systems, easy login, consistent network access and more.
We will develop a system to assess and repair the computers, replacing equipment as needed and as funding is available.
Since the equipment is also used for other classes, we need to maintain the functionality of the computers on the table before and after class.
Processer and clock - The computer has to process information, usually as a system of counting and keeping track of time.
Long term Memory - Hard drive or flash drive - When the computer starts up, it needs to get things like the operating system, programs and applications and documents. These things are only called up when they are needed by either the computer or the user.
Operating Memory - RAM or Random Access Memory - While the computer is running, it needs to have memory to store the operating system and programs and documents that are being used.
Operating system - Windows, Mac OS, Linux - When the computer turns on, it has to know how to process the information.
Power - The power supply of the computer converts Alternating Current from the wall to the Direct current of the various voltages needed by the components of the computer.
Physical structure - The case of a computer is often a simple box with standardized mounting holes and tabs to hold the components of the computer. It is possible to modify the case in ways that are playful, creative and unique.
Cooling - Many of the electrical systems in the computer create waste heat as they work. They operate better if they are kept cool. Cooling systems are often fans that push or pull air across heat sinks attached to the CPU or other integrated circuits. Some systems use water or other fluids, which can be more effective and quieter. Liquid systems are more difficult to install, and carry a risk of leakage.
Input devices - Keyboards, mice, scanner, This is how you get information in to the computer
Output devices - Monitor, printer, speakers,
Networking - Wired or wireless - The computer needs to send and recieve information to other computers and devices locally and worldwide.
Online accounts:
Each student will need to make an online account. The naming of the account is important for consistency, so read the document linked below for more information:
http://duxtech.pbwiki.com/ComputerBasedLearning
homework:
create a gmail account.
Your profile name must be:
FirstnameLastinitialDHSbarcSpring09@gmail.com
- Bring in a print of the profile page to class on Monday
You will be using your gmail account to make your documentation and other projects during the semester.
- Bring in your safety release form signed on Monday
